Host a BCycle Station

What does it mean to host a BStation?

New Houston BCycle stations are often funded and then “hosted” at the site of different organizations and businesses across Houston. Examples include: MFAH, Project Row Houses, and Tellepsen YMCA.

For an idea of how a new station can connect with our existing system, please review our current station map. The larger Houston BCycle network incorporates several “mini-networks” of stations in areas like (but not limited to) Downtown, Midtown, East End, and Rice University.

Stations that are located within or near one of our existing mini-networks provide a much greater benefit to our riders than stations that are isolated from the rest of our system. Density is a plus in the bike share world, as our system prioritizes frequent, short trips.

Why host a station?

Hosting to a Houston BCycle station provides numerous benefits, not only for the host, but for all adjacent businesses, organizations, and public spaces. The station becomes a checkout and return point for Houston BCycle riders, providing them easy access to all of the nearby destinations within walking and biking distance.

Since launching in 2012, Houston BCycle’s ridership has grown rapidly. In 2020, Houston BCycle riders took 303,000+ trips. Have a look at the latest Annual Report for information on how a Houston BCycle station can fuel growth and benefit the surrounding community.

How can you host a BStation?

There are two preliminary items you should review before we can start the process of hosting a Houston BCycle station:

Siting: A Houston BCycle station takes up 37 feet by 9 feet of space on average. Do you have or will you have the ability to dedicate enough room for a new station at your desired location? While you’re measuring, please take some photos of the proposed station location and surrounding area.

Funding: Fully funded, Houston BCycle stations typically cost between $70-90K to implement. Funds that go toward hosting a BCycle station are considered donations, and are tax deductible. Ongoing station maintenance is covered by Houston BCycle.
